A$AP Rocky has delved into the archives of PUMA to bring life to the Straycat. The silhouette takes inspiration from the 2005 Ouninpohja Explorador II, translating codes associated with trail running and rallying into a modern model designed for streetwear.
Design Inspiration and Foundation
The foundation of the Straycat stems directly from the Ouninpohja Explorador II, a trail shoe that PUMA launched in 2005 and which A$AP Rocky selected from the brand’s archives. The shoe's design incorporates various racing elements, notably its enveloping sole unit and references to tires, providing the core basis for this new interpretation.
Rocky further enhanced this construction with intentionally aged materials and a functional double-lacing system. Utilizing a striking PUMA Black / Formula Red palette, the model rests primarily on dark tones, punctuated by red accents that complement the shoe's overall raw aesthetic.
Elevated Details and Finish
Underfoot, PUMA utilizes a Vibram sole enhanced with traction patterns inspired by real tires. The design also extends beyond the base, as the midsole rises up onto certain parts of the upper, visually reinforcing the model’s off-road influence. Completing this athletic look is a co-branded PUMA Cat placed near the toe, visible on the Vibram sole unit.
