The global scarcity of memory chips is beginning to impact the availability of the MacBook Air. In the United States, certain configurations show wait times stretching for several weeks, driven by the rapid expansion of infrastructure dedicated to artificial intelligence, which puts increasing pressure on memory production capabilities.
After previously affecting Mac mini and Mac Studio, supply tensions over memory are now impacting the MacBook Air, one of Apple's most popular computers. According to distribution sources, deliveries are currently highly constrained. On the Apple Store US website, delays can reach two to six weeks depending on the configuration. Models equipped with more memory are the most affected, with some orders reportedly postponed until September.
Industry Constraints and Pricing Changes
This situation is part of a broader shortage affecting both DRAM and NAND memory. The rapid development of data centers dedicated to artificial intelligence drives high demand for server components. Consequently, memory manufacturers are allocating increased capacity primarily to these large enterprise markets. This shift reduces the available supply for certain consumer electronics devices and contributes to rising costs for memory and storage.
Apple previously raised the price of several products in June. In the US, the MacBook Air now starts at $1,299, up from $1,099.
Supply tensions are also appearing within Apple’s commercial communications. Some materials related to the back-to-school season now include the disclaimer "MacBook Air subject to availability," while the entry-level MacBook Pro is occupying a more prominent place in Mac promotions. Furthermore, Apple is reportedly looking to further diversify its memory supply sources, including through Chinese suppliers, in order to better address current constraints.
The situation with the MacBook Air directly illustrates the repercussions of the growth of AI infrastructure on the consumer market, where memory availability and cost are becoming increasingly visible constraints.
